China Tour: Dandelion School

Many people in rural China migrate to the city in search of work.  Located in the rural area just outside Beijing, the Dandelion School is a school for the children of migrant workers.  It's a middle school that runs completely on donations.  The goal is to give these children opportunities in the workplace, and therefore the ability to transcend their social class, and escape from the cycle of poverty.

Last summer during my tour with Primary Source and Education First, the other teachers and I met with the principal and a few teachers from the Dandelion School.  Zengh Hong, the principal and founder of the school, took us on a tour.  We met the students from the summer school, read to them, and played games with them to help them improve their English.  They taught us a few words in Mandarin Chinese.  Finally, we ate lunch with students and staff from the school.
